Workshop information

Venue

The workshop takes place at the Nordic Folk Academy (NFA). This is located in an area called Nya Varvet (The New Wharf) on the harbour front in the western part of Göteborg, approximately six kilometers from the city centre. A map of the area is available here. The numbers in brackets you'll find on this page refers to that map.

Registration etc.

The registration takes place at the main entrance of the Nordic Folk Academy (11) on Tuesday May 9, 11.00 a.m. - 1.00 p.m.

The participation, accommodation and some of the meals (breakfasts, coffee/tea in the breaks, and some evening meals) are free for all participants.

Meals

Breakfast: Breakfasts will be available for the participants living at Nordic Folk Academy at 7.30-8.45 in Restaurang Reveljen (13), which is located about hundred meters from the Nordic Folk Academy. Also those who live in flats can have breakfast at NFA.

Lunch: There are two places in the conference area where you can have lunch: Bruna Villan (18) and Restaurang Reveljen (13). The price is approx. 70 Skr.

Dinner: On Tuesday evening there is a welcome reception with something to eat at the Gibraltar Manor at Chalmers. On Wednesday evening, some snacks will be provided at the poster session, and on Friday there is a conference dinner. The other evenings no dinner arrangements are made.

For those of you who stay at Nordic Folk Academy, there are cooking facilities in the rooms.

Transport to the conference area

The easiest way to get to the Nordic Folk Academy is by taxi. The place may be a bit difficult to find even for taxi drivers, who perhaps only know the main institute at Nya Varvet, which is The Nordic School of Public Health (Nordiska Hälsovårdshögskolan). To find the right building, the best thing may be to print out a map of the area. The main building there, no 6, is the Nordic School of Public Health, and the Nordic Folk Academy building is no 11 in the North Eastern (upper right) part of the area.

Below we describe how to get to NFA by public transportation, or by car. If you intend to do that, we recommend you to bring a street map of the surroundings (click here, and write "nya varvet" in the search field - Nya Varvet is the black part on the map), in addition to a map of the Nya Varvet area.

What to do in Göteborg: Hints for Beginners

Restaurants

Restaurants can be found pretty much all over the city, but there are two restaurant streets that we particularly recommend:
  • Kungsportsavenyn (or simply Avenyn}, from Kungsportsplatsen to Götaplatsen. This is the main tourist street, and has among other things a varied international (mainly Asian and Italian) cuisine.
  • Linnégatan, from Järntorget to Linnéplatsen. Many of the Gothenburgers themselves prefer Linnégatan to Avenyn.
  • In both cases, there are many nice restaurants on the smaller side-streets. Göteborg is known in Sweden for its superb fish.

    Excursions

There are plenty of parks in Göteborg. The biggest one is Slottsskogen (take tram 1 or 2 to Linnéplatsen, or tram 1, 2 or 7 to Botaniska) which is a nice place for a walk. The Botanical Garden, which lies just beside Slottskogen is highly recommended.

A very nice way to see a little of the harbour of Göteborg is from the boat Älvsnabben. It belongs to the public transportation, and has one terminus in Klippan, which is 10 minutes walk from NFA, and the other just by the opera in the city centre. You can use the same tickets as for buses and trams, see below.

A somewhat more ambitious project is to take tram 4 to Saltholmen (which is quite close to the conference area), from where there are boats to several of the islands in Göteborg's beautiful archipelago.

    Museums

There are several museums in Göteborg. The arts museum Konstmuseet at Götaplatsen is definitely worth a visit, as is the Röhss Museum of Decorative Art and Design.

More information about culture in Göteborg can be found here.

    Public transportation

Tickets for the trams and buses cost 16 Skr, and can be bought by the driver. You don't need a new ticket when you change tram or bus. If you plan to go by tram or bus more than 6 times, we advise you to buy a magnetic tram/bus-card. They are available at the Pressbyrån shops and many other tobacco/newspaper shops, and cost 100 Skr. They can also be bought from the driver at the slightly higher cost of 120 Skr. When you start a trip within Göteborg city, insert the card in the ticket machine and press the "2" button. When changing to a different bus or tram, press the "BYTE" button. The card is valid for approximately 10 one-way trips (the ticket machine will yell at you when the card has run out of credits).

    Shopping

The main shopping centre (claimed to be Scandinavia's biggest) is "Nordstan", located on the north side of Brunnsparken, just a hundred meters west of Drottningtorget and the Central Station. The main shopping area extends to the other side Brunnsparken (i.e. south of the canal Stora Hamnkanalen). In this area, next to Kungsportsplatsen, you will find "Saluhallen", the city's well-known market hall.

    The weather

The weather in May is often nice in Göteborg, which means that the temperature might rise to about 20 degrees. However: Be prepared for rain and chilly weather.
