Statistical Methods in Fatigue of Materials
March 29-April 1, 1998
Swedish National Testing and Research Institute, Borås, Sweden
Purpose
This workshop will provide a forum for scientific discussions concerning
statistical methods for fatigue applications. Invited international scientists
will meet Swedish researchers from industry and universities to discuss
problems of mutual interest. Mathematicians working with statistical methods
applicable to fatigue problems, and fatigue researchers and industrial
participants interested in statistical feedback, are especially welcome
to present their work and to take part in the discussion sessions.
Programme
The workshop presentations are divided into three technical sessions:
- Fatigue resistance, randomness of materials
- Fatigue actions, random loads
- Fatigue assessment and safety considerations
All sessions include one 50 minute talk and a couple of 20 minute talks,
followed by discussions with the intention of finding common new research
directions. For each session we have invited two discussion leaders with
backgrounds in statistics and solid mechanics respectively.
Among the invited speakers and discussion leaders who have already accepted
are:
Hans Andersson, Sweden
Stefano Beretta, Italy
André Bignonnet, France
Anders Blom, Sweden
Mike Brown, Great Britain
Sture Holm, Sweden
Gary Marquis, Finland
Fred Nilsson, Sweden
Holger Rootzén, Sweden
Jack Samuelsson, Sweden
Tim Topper, Canada
Geng Sheng Wang, Sweden
Workshop Contributions
Participants willing to contribute a 20 minute oral presentation or a poster
are invited to submit extended abstracts of up to three pages to the mailing
address to be received not later than January 15, 1998. The abstracts will
be accepted or rejected February 1, and used as a basis for the discussion
sessions.
Abstracts should be submitted on paper, and preferably also electronically.
For instructions see http://www.md.chalmers.se/Centres/SC/submissionfatigue.html
or write to Boel Wadman, SP, see below. The documentation from this workshop
will consist of copies of the extended abstracts, or full papers from participants
preferring that option. Authors of presentations connected with the statistics
of extremes will have a possibility of publishing in the journal "Extremes",
edited by Holger Rootzén.

Location
The Swedish National Testing and Research Institute (SP) develops and transfers
technology for improving competitiveness and quality in industry, and for
safety, conservation of resources and good environment in society as a
whole. With Sweden's widest and most sophisticated range of equipment and
expertise for technical investigation, measurement, testing and certification,
SP performs research and development in close liaison with universities,
institutes of technology and international partners. SP is a EU-notified
body and accredited test laboratory. Our headquarters are in Borås
in the western part of Sweden about 40 km east of Gothenburg/Landvetter
International Airport.
Accommodation
A number of rooms have been reserved for workshop attendees in city hotels
(SEK 900 - 700/night 1997). Please note on the registration card if you
wish assistance with hotel reservation. The workshop will begin at 9 a.m.
on Monday March 30 and end at 4 p.m. on April 1, 1998.
Social Programme
A Welcome reception will be held Sunday evening (March 29), hosted by the
City of Borås. For those interested, an informal excursion to a mini
train, and a visit to SP Mechanics' testing laboratories will be arranged.
The conference dinner is on Tuesday evening.

Visitor Programme
This international workshop is linked to a national network in mathematical
statistics, which includes a visitor programme. Two major nodes in the
network are Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg and Lund University.
The visitor programme for statistical methods in fatigue is scheduled
March-April 1998, with March in Gothenburg and April in Lund. The emphasis
will be on statistical aspects but some invited participants will represent
the experimental and engineering side. The guests will be long-term visitors
(2 months), short-term visitors (up to a month) and the participants in
the workshop.
