Homework

The examination will be based entirely on homework assignments. I expect you to hand in at least four problems each week. Hand in on Fridays according to the following plan. Put them in a box outside my office.

week 2: Choose two from chapter 2 and two from the appendix. Suggested: 2.4, 2.8, A.4, A.13

week 3: Choose four from chapter 3. Suggested: 3.4, 3.8, 3.10, 3.11, 3.5, 3.9

week 4: Choose four from chapter 5. Suggested: 5.1, 5.5, 5.6, 5.7 5.12, 5.12

week 5: Hand in two from chapter 8: suggested 8.5, 8.10 (both by the energy method) (hint for 8.5: multiply the equation by t) (hint for 8.10: differentiate the equation with respect to t)

week 6: Do the following from chapter 8: 8.10 by eigenfunction expansion, 8.8 by the energy method, 8.14 by the maximum principle.

week 7: Do the following from chapter 10: 10.4 (a) (additional hint: use problem 8.10 also), 10.6.

I will also appreciate if you report mistakes and misprints in the textbook and make suggestions for improvement, especially new exercises.

Old exams: 031022, solutions, 021021 (ps), 981023 solutions.

Very old exams: 901101 solutions, 921104 solutions, 931104 solutions, 940108
