TMA325 Introduction to Engineering Mathematics

The purpose of the course

The international students have rather different backgrounds. The purpose of this course is to introduce them to the university and the mathematics department, and to bring them into a common ground, which is necessary for their work in the other courses of the program and the masters thesis.

The course will contain the following topics:

introduction to Matlab;

introduction to emacs;

introduction to LaTeX;

Linear algebra, systems of ordinary differential equations, modeling of a tank reactor.

training in report writing (with LaTeX) and oral presentation.

We will do this by working through the details of a simple application problem from chemical engineering: the tank reactor. This work is guided by rather detailed written instructions, containing (i) modeling of the tank reactor, (ii) mathematical analysis of the model, and (iii) Matlab computation with the model.

The course is examined in the form of a written report which is also presented orally to the teacher and the group.
