Examination
Everyone that finishes the assignments and gives a short talk will
get a
passing grade (3 or G). If you would like to get a higher grade, you
will have to do a combined oral and written exam. Here are the details:
- Graduate students usually do not
have to take the exam. The only exception is when a department has
decided that a graduate student needs a grade of at least four to
include the course. This does not seem to be a common practice.
- The exam will be available on the web and you will get a
link and a password a given time and date (this will be decided in
class) so you can access the problems.
- You should solve the problems and be prepared to present your
solutions the next day (24 hours after the handout, in my office).
So if you get access to the problems on Monday at 13:00 you should show
up in my office on Tuesday at 13:00.
You may bring any material you consider to be necessary. We will not
have much time, so it is important that your material is in order.
There will be no time to search or transfer files, for example.
- I need access to your programs, see the exam-text for practical details.
- When I have decided the grade, I will send it to you by
e-mail. So give me a paper containing your e-mail address.
- The exam consists of four problems. They will resemble some of
the harder assignments. So you need access to the student computer
system (for some of the problems). There may be paper and pencil
problems as well.
- Since this is a course about practical computing, it is important
that your solutions work. Your programs must compile, link, execute and
produce the correct answers. I will be less interested in elegant
principles and ideas which you have not implemented.
- You are guaranteed a grade of 3/G regardless of
how this exam goes. If you decide not to go through with the exam, you
do not have to show up at the discussion, but please inform me (e-mail
or phone) that you are not coming.
- You
have 20 minutes to present what you have done. When the 20 minutes are
up a new student will show up, so you have to be efficient.
- These problems should be solved individually. You
are not allowed to consult anyone, although you may of course ask me if
something is unclear. Asking anyone else for help is cheating.
