Call for Student Project Proposals in BIOINFORMATICS (during summer/autumn 2002)Chalmers International Master's Programme in Bioinformatics was started in close collaboration with Göteborg University in autumn 2000. Students of molecular and cell biology, medicine, engineering, computing science, mathematics and statistics, study together in an interdisciplinary environment at the Schools of Mathematics and Computer Science and at the Lundberg Laboratory at the Medical Hill. A new bioinformatics facility in the Lundberg Laboratory (former library) is used as a physical centre for interactions between seniors and students. Students accepted to the programme have a bachelor level degree in science or engineering. The programme is one and a half years long. Eighteen students, took part in the first round and more than 20 students in the second round. There will be a yearly recruiting of up to thirty students in the future. For the curriciulum, detailed course plans and more, see: http://www.math.chalmers.se/Stat/Bioinfo/Master/index.html A challenge in working with students with varied background, is to get synergetic effects from their respective disciplines. Thus we wish that the majority of the students should perform their final graduation projects in pairs that are composed of one "bio/medic" student and one "computing/engineering/math" student. We have very good experience from the first round that has just finished, see http://www.math.chalmers.se/Stat/Bioinfo/Master/Theses/ The 20 credit unit (=one semester) projects will start in summer/autumn 2002 and should be finished before the end of year 2002. We call for topic suggestions for these final pair projects, that ideally should have challenging biology/medicine and math/computing science/statistics components and scientific as well as practical flavours. We know that there are many research groups, medical clinics and industries that will need their own "house bioinformatician" in the future and we believe this should be a convenient chance for you to get close contacts with well trained candidates. The senior scientists engaged in the Chalmers/SWEGENE Bioinformatics efforts will be happy to be supervising partners in the realised projects. Please send us suggestions for projects (ideally by e-mail in a tentative summary form, a page or two, with a handful of references) as soon as possible and for projects to start this year, before the end of February 2002 ( we wish to start the student-project matchings in the middle of March.) You are certainly also welcome to contact any of us for further discussions.
