Some guidelines for mathematical reports & presentations

Reports, general guidelines

  • Be careful to define all variables and functions that you use properly.
  • Make sure that things are in the right order, so that everything you are using at a certain point is previously defined.
  • Present all theorems and mathematical laws you use in the analysis of your problem.
  • If you have a lot of notation, it might be a good idea to include a list over all definitions.

The report should include:

  1. Titlepage

    • Title of the report.
    • Names and personal data of the authors, plus class and year.
    • Abstract (sv. Referat), which is a very short summary of your report, including conclusions.

  2. Introduction

    • An overview of the problem
    • Provide background information to put the problem in perspective.

  3. Problem description

    • Here the problem should be described mathematically.

  4. Preparation

    • Here are the theorems and mathematical techniques that are going to be used in
      the analysis presented.

  5. Analysis

    • Here is where the actual mathematical analysis (the calculations) are presented.

  6. Summary and conclusions

    • Short summary of the report.
    • Conclusions (if there are any).

  7. Appendix

    • If you want to include figures, matlab code, or plots, you should put it in the Appendix.

Presentations, general guidelines

  • Make sure you know what you are going to say, so you do not have to think about that during your presentation
  • Finish on time, and plan for questions within your timeframe
  • Use slides - saves time, and they can serve you as a support during your presentation
  • Do not put too much on each slide
  • Do not use too small font size
  • Avoid refering to previous slides, repeat the formula/argument instead
  • Do not try to say too much, skip details (save it for the report)

The presentation should include:

Introduction

  • Introduce yourself/your group to the audience
  • Describe the purpose of your presentation
  • Describe in general terms the outline of your presentation

Conclusion

  • Sum up your presentation
  • Present your conclusions (if there are any)
