Some guidelines for mathematical reports & presentations
Reports, general guidelines
- Be careful to define all variables and functions that you use properly.
- Make sure that things are in the right order, so that everything
you are using at a certain point is previously defined.
- Present all theorems and mathematical laws you use in the analysis of your problem.
- If you have a lot of notation, it might be a good idea to
include a list over all definitions.
The report should include:
Titlepage
- Title of the report.
- Names and personal data of the authors, plus class and year.
- Abstract (sv. Referat), which is a very short summary of
your report, including conclusions.
Introduction
- An overview of the problem
- Provide background information to put the problem in perspective.
Problem description
- Here the problem should be described mathematically.
Preparation
- Here are the theorems and mathematical techniques that are going
to be used in
the analysis presented.
Analysis
- Here is where the actual mathematical analysis (the calculations)
are presented.
Summary and conclusions
- Short summary of the report.
- Conclusions (if there are any).
Appendix
- If you want to include figures, matlab code, or plots, you should
put it in the Appendix.

Presentations, general guidelines
- Make sure you know what you are going to say, so you do not have
to think about that during your presentation
- Finish on time, and plan for questions within your timeframe
- Use slides - saves time, and they can serve you as a support during
your presentation
- Do not put too much on each slide
- Do not use too small font size
- Avoid refering to previous slides, repeat the formula/argument instead
- Do not try to say too much, skip details (save it for the report)
The presentation should include:
Introduction
- Introduce yourself/your group to the audience
- Describe the purpose of your presentation
- Describe in general terms the outline of your presentation
Conclusion
- Sum up your presentation
- Present your conclusions (if there are any)
