Mathematics, statistics and computer science for interpreting structure

This research workshop is supported by the German Humboldt-Foundation, the Swedisch Research Society, the Chalmers Stochastic Center and the Gothenberg Mathematical Modelling Center

In the last decades, we have witnessed the technical progress with respect to measuring, collecting, storing and processing data. Consequences are the continuously increasing sets of data arising from empirical studies in many different fields and a corresponding, strongly increased need for modeling approaches that recognize and exploit existing structure. The tasks of formulating, analyzing and interpreting the corresponding statistical models typically increase in complexity with the number of variables unless some type of structure simplifies joint distributions.

For the appropriate interpretation of an elucidated structure in  a given substantive context, intensified research is required of possible new combinations of graph-theoretic arguments, probabilistic reasoning and statistical modeling approaches. This is the motivation for bringing together a small group of mathematicians, statisticians and computer scientists that have already been supported by the Humboldt Foundation, as well as younger  and more experienced other researchers in these areas.
