2023-06-20 General information updated.
2019-06-04 The
language is now English and it has been almost completely rewritten since
we're moving to Canvas in the autumn.
2019-04-28
This page will shortly be completely rewritten since we will start using
the course room in Canvas, the new learning management system at GU and
Chalmers. You login to Canvas with your CID and your usual password at
Chalmers
canvas regardless if the course is at GU or Chalmers. For the
workshop on April 29 some of you will need the following templates to
import to your own training course:
Chalmers
Swedish,
Chalmers
English,
GU Swedish,
GU English.
This web page was created in June 2013, initially in Swedish but since
May 2019 in English. Significant changes to the page content will be
announced here. The revisions before 2019 has been deleted since they
are now obsolete.
We now use Canvas for our course homepages on Mathematical Sciences.
All old course websites can be reached via
utb.math.chalmers.se
Starting from autumn 2019 both GU and Chalmers change
their Learning management system (LMS) to Canvas (from GUL/Pingpong). In
conjunction with this, we will from autumn 2019 use Canvas as the platform
for the homepage for all courses given by Mathematical sciences. Hence
instead of having material both on GUL/Pingpong and on a separate web
page, everything will now be on Canvas.
Learning Canvas
The teachers' meeting in spring 2019 was devoted to a
workshop on Canvas and there will be a second chance in June 2019 to learn
the basics. There are also
introductions
arranged by Chalmers. The best and most relevant online introduction
is the
information created by the project group at Chalmers in the form of
a course in Canvas. This covers both the basics and some more advanced
topics. The more advanced user might also want to
consult
the information provided by the developers of Canvas.
Support
We have two local LMS-supporters, Thomas Wernstål and Elisabeth
Eriksson, who will be able to answer many of the question you might
have. There is also central
support on Chalmers which can be reached by canvas@chalmers.se.
Getting started
You login with your Chalmers ID and regular password at https://chalmers.instructure.com/,
regardless if the course is at Chalmers, GU or joint between the two.
Once your logged in you will see all your courses on your Dashboard.
Clicking on one of the courses will take you to that course's home page
where you can add to and edit the content. We have some information
specific to MV collected in this area in Canvas (only accessible after login)
including information about linking Canvas with Möbius.
Course template
We have a basic template for our courses in Canvas with a Swedish and
an English version depending on the language used in the course and with
slight variations for GU and Chalmers. This template contains two pages.
The starting page holds the program of the course and a second page
contains the course-PM. This has been designed to conform with the rules
at GU and Chalmers
regarding necessary information to the students. You should not
delete (or move) any of the sections except those which are not
relevant to the course. In particular, on the course-PM the only section
that could be deleted is "Old exams".
The first time the course is given in Canvas, the examiner is expected
to populate the template with all the information from scratch and/or
copy selected information from previous home pages. Make sure that none
of the text in the template is replaced (except of course text that is
only explanatory to the examiner), since some of this information has
been updated since last year. For future instances of the course, last
year's page will be copied so you can start editing from that. Note that
nothing will be visible to the outside world until you publish the page,
so you can edit it without worrying about the content not being up to
date.
Necessary content
The page should be
published no later than two weeks
before the course starts. After the course has started nothing in
the course-PM should be changed except for correcting mistakes. The
following list contains everything that is necessary to include and there
is a dedicated place in the template for every item:
- Name and contact information for course examiner and preferably also
to other staff involved in the course
- Course content
- Course objective and learning outcomes (a link to the course
syllabus is recommended)
- Compilation of major changes made since the last occasion.
- Course literature, as well as which parts are included
- Schedule (given as a link to Time Edit, but may also be listed)
- Program for lectures, exercises and other teaching activities
- Compulsory parts of the course and the forms of examination
- Allowed aids at examination
- Requirements for grades G and VG respectively 3, 4 and 5
- For Chalmers: A reference to the fact that time and place for the
exam are found in the
student portal, and for GU: Information about day and time of
exam, or a reference to
the examination schedule. (See "Routines around exams" in the
course template.)
Note that the information must conform to the course syllabus. You
decide for yourself, and to what extent, you want to put old exams, with
or without solutions, on the course page. Pages for courses given in
English must be written in English, no Swedish version is needed. For
courses given in Swedish, no English version is needed.
Public content
All information about the course in Canvas should be
public and visible to everyone. This is set by default and you're not
allowed to change this. This does not include information about people in
the course, results on tests, groups, or messages and other interactive
content which is always hidden. If you visit a course without logging in
you'll see what it looks for people not involved in the course. If you
have copyrighted material or other documents that you only want the
students and teachers to access, then you can hide these files and share a
link to them with the participants (see the documentation on Canvas or ask
a Canvas supporter).
Joint courses between Chalmers and GU will have only one
homepage and it will be placed on the Chalmers server. However, students
studying the GU version of the course will login to the GU server in the
same way as it does for regular GU courses.
