TMS031 and MSA250 Design of Experiments (Spring 2017)

Course description

This course is taken by master students as well as PhD students. The course Spring 2017 will be lectured Tuesdays 13:15-15:00 and Thursdays 8:00-11:45 from January 17 to March 2. The lectures will be given at the Department of Mathematical Sciences in room MVH11.

Note some changes in the schedule: The lecture starts at 12:30 on Tuesday, January 24. And on Thursday, February 2, there will only be one hour of Exercises.

The exams with short answers are found here: March 15 , May 2 and June 9 . The exams can be fetched at the Student Office at MV.

The Design of Experiments course approaches the problem how to plan a number of trials to obtain required information. Is it at all possible to obtain the information in question within the given resources? How valid is the information taken the model uncertainty and the scatter of the trials into account? To vary one factor at a time can be a very dangerous strategy when interactions between the factors are present.

Within the course, analysis of variance and multiple linear regression are studied in the context of factorial designs at two and more levels. Fractional factor designs, block designs, randomization and response surface methods are discussed as well.

Prerequisites for the course are: Basic courses in linear algebra, calculus and mathematical statistics. We will also assume that you have refreshed these topics before the first lecture. You find the course plan here: [Course Plan MSA250] [Course Plan TMS031]

Lecturers:

Torbjörn Lundh and Kerstin Wiklander

Project advisor:

Henrik Imberg

Literature:

Box, G. E. P., Hunter, W. G., and Hunter, J. S. Statistics for Experimenters, John Wiley & Sons, New York. 2005

Examination:

Written examination March 15, 8.30 to 12.30 in the SB-building (previously known as "V-huset"). To pass the exam 15 out of 30 points are required. (For VG at GU 22 p. For grade 4 and 5 at Chalmers, 20 and 25 p respectively.) To pass the entire course approved projects are required as well. Note that you are only allowed to bring a minicalculator (with empty memory) with you at the exam, no lecture notes etc. This paper with distributions and one with tables will be handed out. If you have not done so yet, please register for the exam at student's office.

Re-examination in MVF32 on May 2nd, 8.30 to 12.30. Registration for this exam is not needed.

Next re-examination will take place on June 9th, 8.30 to 12.30 in the SB-building (previously known as "V-huset"). Registration for this exam is not needed.
