Student Union
Membership in the Student Union is compulsory. Bring your contract of employment.
Chalmers Student Union: tel 3906/3907, address Teknologgården 2. Chalmers has a "doktorandombudsman", Bengt Stebler. See http://www.chs.chalmers.se/~dokt/
Filosofiska Fakulteternas Studentkår (Göteborg University): tel 708 4440, address Götabergsgatan 17. See http:// www.ffs.gu.se (only in Swedish).

Compulsory introductions/courses
Chalmers has an introduction day, usually in September. There are also two compulsory doctoral courses, Teaching, learning and evaluation and Ethics, science and society. See http://www.ckk.chalmers.se/
Faculty of Science has a compulsory introduction course for PhD students, and a compulsory course in Teaching Science. See
http://www.science.gu.se/intranet/forskutb/fkurser.shtml

Doctoral studentship
The studentship is normally five years, of which four years are full time studies. The remaining 20% are teaching and administrative work. Full time means 40 hours a week. Working hours are based on the honour system, in which you have full freedom regarding when and where you do your work within the restrictions of the operations of the university. There is no overtime compensation. The first period of employment is one year, the second two years and the third two years. After each period an evaluation is made.

Unpaid leave for another employment could be accepted for a shorter period, if the employment is considered to be in line with the thesis work. There are also occasions when you can have paid leave of absence, see http://www.adm.chalmers.se/Intern/Personal/Engelsk/Leave.html

The period of employment could be prolonged due to parental leave or sick leave. Before prolongation, a new study plan must be established.

Salary
For doctoral students, there is a salary table. At Chalmers, the initial salary is 21300 SEK/month. When you have your licentiate degree the salary will rise with 2930 SEK/month, and when 80% of the requirements for the PhD degree are fulfilled there will be a further rise with 900 SEK/month.

At the Faculty of Science, Göteborg University, the initial salary is 20 700 SEK/month, after licentiate degree 23 800 SEK/month, and after 80% of your studies 25 130 SEK/month.

Courses and business travels
You must see to it that your courses are being reported to the computer system (contact the secretaries). It is important that your financing of a business travel is ready in due time before you go and that it is approved (for the sake of insurance etc).

Personnel matters
Ann-Margret Alsin is our personnel officer at Chalmers, ext 8461, e-mail ann-margret.alsin@math.chalmers.se. Information can be found at http://www.adm.chalmers.se/Intern/Personal/Engelsk/index.html

Holidays
We assume that you have your holiday during the summer months. If you want to have your holiday at other times of the year, you must talk to the head of the division and the director of studies. You have 28 days until you have turned 29 years, 31 days from the year you turn 30, and 34 from the year you turn 40. Holiday compensation is normally paid in August.

Sickness and health
Contact your supervisor or the head of the division. For Chalmers employees, register your sick leave application in PrimulaWeb (see Personnel matters). For Göteborg University employees, fill in the form http://blanketter.gu.se/pdf/personal/Forsakransjukdomsfall.pdf and give to Marianne Rosander Bäckström (see above). Remuneration for costs associated with health care in connection with an industrial injury is a tax-free benefit. For Chalmers employees, register in PrimulaWeb and send your original receipt to "Löne- och reseräkningsservice". För Göteborg university employees, fill in the form http://blanketter.gu.se/pdf/personal/Ersattninglakarvlakem.pdf and send it to Ingela Lyck, Fakultetskansliet för Naturvetenskap.
