Workshop on

Probability, Trees, and Genetics

Chalmers, Göteborg, May 22-23, 2003.

This workshop takes place at the Mathematics Centre, Chalmers, Göteborg. Talks will focus on probability theory, tree structures, and problems motivated by genetics. (Be aware, however, that this is a mathematics meeting, not a genetics meeting!) The main event is a four hour mini-course by Elchanan Mossel, and in addition there will be talks by five other researchers.

Organizer: Olle Häggström

The workshop schedule is as follows.

Thursday, May 22
11.00-11.45 room MD6 Simon Tavaré, University of Southern California Computing probabilities on trees
11.45-13.00 lunch break
13.00-13.45 room MD6 Elchanan Mossel, UC Berkeley A crash course: reconstruction on trees
14.00-14.45 room MD6 Elchanan Mossel, UC Berkeley A crash course: reconstruction on trees (continued)
15.15-16.00 room MD6 Tom Britton, Stockholm University Phylogenetic inference: estimating evolutionary tree properties from DNA sequences
16.15-17.00 room MD6 Johan Jonasson, Chalmers Random colorings of trees
18.30- Conference dinner at Nära Hem Bar & Kök, Gibraltargatan 80 (just a couple of minutes' walk from the Mathematics Centre).
Friday, May 23
9.00-9.45 room S1 Ingemar Kaj, Uppsala University The coalescent process in a population with stochastically varying size
10.15-11.00 room S1 Elchanan Mossel, UC Berkeley A crash course: reconstruction on trees (continued)
11.15-12.00 room S1 Elchanan Mossel, UC Berkeley A crash course: reconstruction on trees (continued)
12.00-13.15 lunch break
13.15-14.00 room MD7 Serik Sagitov, Chalmers The coalescent with simultaneous multiple mergers of ancestral lines

No pre-registration is needed to take part in the workshop, but participants wishing to join the dinner on Thursday evening should contact the organizer (O.H.) as the number of seats is limited.

For more information, please contact the organizer. This is a Stochastic Centre event.
