The newly established Gothenburg Stochastic Centre is organizing a guest programme in Population Dynamics during April and May 1998. It will culminate in a workshop 11 - 15 May.

Themes

Emphasis is on conceptual matters and general theory of population growth and extinction, rather than on special populations. Particular themes that have been mentioned include
  • Dependence/interaction in population dynamics and branching processes.
  • The process of extinction in a historical perspective: how gradual is "natural" extinction, as opposed to catastrophies?
  • Quasi-stationarity and its role in the evolution of populations now extinct.
  • Mathematical and Statistical Aspects of Molecular Biology.
  • Cell kinetics.
  • Meta-populations.
  • Participants will have a background in probability and statistics, in mathematical population dynamics and/or various branches of biology. The workshop will take place at the Gothenburg Mathematical Centre - we regret that we have been forced to cancel the two days at the Tjärnö Marine Biological Laboratory, since this is a time when that is heavily used for field work.
